Tinka Pittoors – Syncope – Sabotage

off-site

The relationship between contemporary art and sabotage is more complex than one often thinks. Sabotage presupposes a deliberate disruption of a system, while art generally aims to produce meaning. Yet both find themselves at a crossroads where artists exert pressure on established aesthetic, institutional and political structures. In this field of tension, art sometimes becomes a subtle form of sabotage: not just destructive, but aimed at discovering what goes without saying. The artist is rarely a stranger who sabotages an external system. It operates most often from within, as an actor within the very system that is criticized. It is precisely in this tension that the position of art as sabotage becomes visible.
