RACHEL LABASTIE : “LES VÉNÉNEUSES”, BELGIAN FEDERAL PARLIAMENT

off-site

Rachel Labastie has been invited to exhibit her recent series Les Vénéneuses at the Belgian Federal Parliament. These tapestries portray historical women who have been unfairly discredited because of their gender, such as Théroigne de Méricourt, a Liège-born figure of the French Revolution.

Rachel Labastie’s work also illustrates this quest for the link between man and his history, and consequently with his environment, through a poetic interweaving of the human and the vegetable. Les Vénéneuses stand out against bluish backgrounds dotted with deadly flowers. From her raw clays emerge feet resembling tree roots, and in her Scènes d’intérieurs, other recent tapestries, the interiors of bodies are transformed into wild landscapes.
